The Journal of Environmental Science and Management released its Special Issue No. 1 2017 with the theme, “Biofuels Research, Developments, Policy Formulation and Recommendation Studies in the Philippines,” sponsored by the University of the Philippines Los Baños – Interdisciplinary Biofuels Research Studies Center (UPLB-IBRSC) headed by Dr. Rex Demafelis, Vice Chancellor for Research and Extension of UPLB. The Special Issue is in line with one of the Center’s missions of serving as a repository of data and information on biofuels research, developments, and policy formulation and recommendation studies relevant for the Philippines and other countries.

Featuring six articles, the special issue presents researches concerning the use of sweet sorghum, jatropha, and refined palm oil for biodiesel production in response to the search for cleaner alternatives for fossil fuels. One article reported that Jatropha curcas L. has the potential to reduce GHG emission by 11% using the current Philippine biodiesel blending of 2%.  The other papers discussed the optimum production of methyl ester from palm oil; some congeners in molecular sieve adsorption to optimize recoverable yield of ethanol; the potential of producing sweet sorghum juice and syrup using conventional sugarcane equipment; the energy balance and water requirement of a commercial scale ethanol production using sweet sorghum; and the shelf life of sweet sorghum syrup.

In addition to two regular issues released in June and December every year, JESAM also occasionally publishes thematic special issues subject to the journal’s standard publication policies after approval of proposals from proponents. The Special Issue on Biofuels is the 5th special issue of JESAM since it published its first in 2012.
