The School of Environmental Science and Management (SESAM) invited a French Professor to conduct an in-house training entitled “Excel it! Using Spreadsheet software (MS Excel) for data treatment and analysis”, last 16 to 17 July, 2021 via Zoom. 

Dr. Nicolas Peyraube, a Professor and hydrogeologist, eagerly delivered three extensive lectures about Microsoft Excel in two consecutive days. This training was organized by the Continuing Education and Training Division (CETD) of SESAM, led by For. Sofia A. Alaira. 

Dr. Peyraube is a Faculty Member of the Institute of Mechanic and Engineering, Civil Engineering and Environmental Department in the University of Bordeaux in France and an Adjunct Professor of SESAM. He said session 1 was mainly on the use of the MS Excel software for data management and processing with emphasis on the shortcuts and tricks that can be applied for easier execution of commands.

Session 1 was composed of the description and terms used in spreadsheets, some basic functions and data handling applications and preparation of graphs with the aid of “Pimp My Graph”. Topics for Session 2 included Frequencies, Regression and Find my value. Dr. Peyraube, who is the husband of SESAM Associate Professor Jessica Villanueva-Peyraube, mentioned that learning keyboard shortcuts is so important and it will definitely make excel use a lot simpler.

Session 3 on day two included topics such as the Solver, Easy Graph and more tips and tricks. Dr. Peyraube said that this training will be very useful for those who have voluminous and diverse data. “I hope that SESAM will apply the practical functions of excel in your research or school exercises”, Dr. Peyraube added. 

This in-house training is part of SESAM’s capability building of faculty, REPS and administrative staff, according to Dean Rico C. Ancog.
