YUSUF A. SUCOL, DVM, MSc.
Dr. Yusuf A. Sucol is University Researcher II of the University of the Philippines Los Banos - Climate and Disaster Risks Studies Center (UPLB-CDRSC) and Affiliate Assistant Professor of the UPLB School of Environmental Science and Management (UPLB-SESAM).
Dr. Sucol obtained his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) in 1995, and his M.S. Veterinary Medicine degree from UPLB in 2004. He is a candidate for a Ph.D. degree in Environmental Science and Management specializing in environmental protection and conservation, and veterinary public health and food safety from UPLB. He is a licensed veterinarian.
Dr. Sucol is actively involved in promoting and building the capacities of the Local Government Units (LGUs) to become climate- and disaster-responsive by assisting and mentoring these LGUs in the conduct of their climate change vulnerability assessments, disaster risks assessments, and formulation of risk-informed strategic measures. He is also involved in projects that work on augmenting smarter approaches to revitalize the Philippine agriculture industry, and on adopting an integrated watershed-based framework for local development planning. His other current project involvements and activities include development of training modules and environment codes, multi-disciplinary book writing, conduct of seminars and information/education/communication/awareness campaigns, and reviews/revisions of educational materials and academic program curriculum.
Dr. Sucol has undergone relevant trainings on enhanced climate change action planning, community resilience building, low emission development mechanisms, green climate programming, and adaptation in agriculture and food security. He has also completed short courses on One Health, Planetary Health, and biodiversity/ecosystem valuation.
Dr. Sucol is UPLB’s permanent and/or alternate representative to the technical working groups (TWG) of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Region IV-A, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Los Banos Climate Change Council (LBCCC), and Los Banos Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (LBDRRMC). He is also a regular participant/respondent to stakeholders’ meetings and workshops conducted by the Climate Change Commission (CCC).
Dr. Sucol has received graduate scholarship awards/grants from the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD), Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture - Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEARCA-SEAMEO), and from the Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Agricultural Research (DA-BAR). His six-year tertiary education is supported by a scholarship awarded to him by the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) Scholarship Programme based in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
