SATREPS HyDEPP concluded its e-Learning Training

The International Centre for Water Hazard and Risk Management (ICHARM) of the Public Works Research Institute(PWRI) in Japan and the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) through the UPLB Interdisciplinary Studies Center for Water (UPLB IdSC Water) successfully conducted the SATREPS-HyDEPP e-learning training for the project “Development of a Hybrid Water-Related Disaster Risk Assessment Technology for Sustainable Local Economic Development Policy under Climate Change in the Republic of the Philippines (HyDEPP)”, under the Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS). The online closing ceremony was held last 26 August 2021 via Zoom platform.

The e-Learning activity intends to aid in the application of developed hybrid water-related disaster risk assessment integrating various models such as climate, agricultural and socio-economic to provide policy recommendations for sustainable economic development in urban and rural areas of Pampanga and Laguna Lake Basins.

About 80 representatives from the academe, national government agencies and other organizations in the Philippines and Japan participated in the month-long training. The training covered three courses: basic lectures on hydrology, climate and disaster risk reduction; flood hazard mapping and risk assessment; and hydro-agriculture-economic models. A total of 49 participants finished the full course work. Top three participants with best outputs were recognized during the closing ceremony.

The HyDEPP members are hopeful that the participants will take part in the activities of the project in the succeeding years either as members, researchers, or partner organizations. Through this capacity-building activity, the participants hope to motivate themselves to do work aligned with the project activities and the collaborative nature of the research will contribute to the success of the project.
