DOST-PCIEERD’s SIBOL webinar first episode featuring Project LIGTAS

In celebration of the 2021 National Disaster Resilience Month, the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST – PCIEERD) launched its first-ever webinar series on Science and Innovation Budding Opportunities for Leverage (SIBOL) held last July 15, 2021, via zoom and Facebook live. This webinar series aims to create awareness of the new projects on emerging disaster mitigation technologies and strategies and highlight their impacts on society.

One of the featured projects of the first episode of SIBOL is the School fo Environmental Science and Management (SESAM)- led project called LIGTAS. Project LIGTAS or the Landslide Inventories for Geohazards preparedness and Timely Advisories in the Philippines focuses on generating site-specific rainfall-landslide thresholds for the mountainous areas of Luzon with the goal of capacitating local government units (LGU) in the formulation of site-specific and semi-quantitative early warning systems.

Dr. Decibel V. Faustino-Eslava, SESAM Professor and Project Leader, presented an overview of Project LIGTAS during the event through an informative video presentation with the project’s rationale, description, and impacts. During the open forum, several collaborators and researchers expressed their interest to join and partner with Project LIGTAS on establishing a national landslide database that can be used to help other agencies, state universities, and colleges (SUCs), and LGUs in the improvement of their research and early warning systems.

SIBOL showcased twelve (12) new projects of DOST-PCIERRD that are being implemented by DOST-PAGASA, UPLB-SESAM, UPD-NIGS, and DENR-MGB. About 400 participants watched via zoom and over 2,000 attendees joined via Facebook live. The next episode of SIBOL will be held on July 28, 2021, featuring projects on Food Security.
